Are there any free Silverlight PDF controls? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey, I'm trying to both create and display PDFs in an OOB app I'm trying to make as part of a hobby. Does anyone know of any good controls for creating and displaying PDFs in Silverlight?

  • At this time there nothing I will call a "good" solution. But there are some solutions.

This component works with Flash and SL for example :http://www.themidnightcoders.com/products/pdf-generator/overview.html

    or this one : http://www.componentone.com/SuperProducts/PDFSilverlight/

There are a lot of other solution of this kind. None are "good", the good one will be a clean lib written in C# specificaly for SL...

  • www.netpdftools.com - pure c# SL library that allows to open/render PDFs and extract/search text

  • it seems this component is a rendering tool to display a PDF in SL.

Cool but the coolest will be a pdf writer...

As anybody has adobe pdf reader already installed, a simple link in an SL app is enough to display a pdf, the real challenge is to generate a PDF locally...

  • Hi,

I can think off in generating the Bitmap image and show print dialog which prints newly created Bitmap image  on to PDF file.

You can also loook @ this also

  • Hi,

did you try these solutions ? I tested them and frankly it is not really handy.

The first real need is a good report generator, not the bitmap thing added in SL4 that will eat gigabytes of memory for 5 pages and that comes with no designer support.
A good report generator that works in SL, easely customizable, something like a "band" reporting tool you can design visualy in VS or Blend.

There are some commercial products of this kind but for what I saw, they are very heavy, slow, not so easy to use, and very expensive.

An RDL solution will be cool, but without the need to have a report server, a bit like the report viewer in Windows Forms that can work in stand alone mode (unfortunately nobody released a good stand alone runtime desgner).

Reporting is something very important for most professionnal apps. It is a bit a shame there is still no good solution for SL.

Generating PDF from a good reporting tool, is also a basic feature (exporting to pdf / excel / html is a basic need today).

But having just some PDF tools is not enough to say we have  a reporting tool...

Perhaps... One day my prince(ss) will come...
