Windows Embedded Compact 7 : Virtual PC BSP image in Windows XP PC RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I installed Visual Studio 2008 and Windows Embedded Compact 7 in Windows XP machine. WinEC 7 doesn't contain any emulator BSP as available with WinCE 6.0. So I am able to create the Virtual PC : x86 bsp image successfully, but don't know how to download this image.

Is Windows XP PC is compatible for installing, building WinEC 7 images. or we need to upgrade to Windows Vista or Windows 7?

    With Advance thanks...

    Siddiq

  • Make sure to have DHCP server in your network, because Bootloader will try to get the IP from DHCP.And also go through the document which Luca has mentioned earlier

    %PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Embedded Compact 7\Documentation\Getting_Started_With_Virtual_CEPC.pdf.

You can use WinXP PC to build image for WEC 7.

For help files the only source is to check in the Visual Studio 2008 help only.Still it is not released in the online. While installing WEC7 the help files WEC 7 also installed to the VS2008 help.

  • You may install two instances of the loopback adapter (see for example http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839013), one for the PC, the other for the VM and set the IP addresses of the two so they belong to the same network.  In the vCEPC command disable the DHCP and set the static IP address

  • Look in %PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Embedded Compact 7\Documentation folder. There's a PDF explaining how to do it

  • Dear Luca,

Thanks for your reply. I didn't find Windows Embedded Compact 7 folder under platform builder. I installed Windows Embedded Automotive 7. Is this PDF is available to download from internet?.

  • Sorry, I thought from your post that you were using Windows Embedded Compact 7. With this installation you can find a VM folder under the VirtualPC BSP: it contains a virtual hard disk file (.vhd) which you can import in a vm created with MS Virtual PC. The vhd includes the necessary files to boot the VirtualPC image. I do not know anything about the Windows Embedded Automotive 7 installation but I hope this can help

  • Hi Luca,

Thanks for your information. Through Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. I am able to run the C:\WINCE700\platform\VirtualPC\VM\cevm.vmc. Its started booting, but not able to get IP address from DHCP server. Its keep on attempting... Any settings changes needs to be done in Virtual PC.

Is there any issue to build Windows Embedded Compact 7 image in Windows XP PC or will it require Windows Vista or Windows 7 desktop OS?

I installed Windows Embedded Compact 7 also in my PC, but Visual Studio 2008 help doesn't contain any information about the Windows Embedded Compact 7 architecture change/ driver architecture change. Is there any help needs to install separately for this?  Is any Microsoft link available to know more about Windows Embedded Compact 7 OS.

        Awaiting for your valuable reply.

    Siddiq

  • Thanks Luca & Prabhu.

Its working fine now. Issue is DHCP server is blocked to issue the IP address.

Is it possible to Device Emulator also in WCE7, as we normally do with WinCE 6.0, B'coz Device Emulator option also present in the Target -> Connectivity Options.

  • WEC 7 does n't support DeviceEmulator BSP.Because it is based on ARMv4i architecture which is no more supported by WEC 7.

  • Thanks  for your information. If there is no network, working in Standalone PC, then how to test the WinEC7 Virtual PC BSP.
