Export "geometry" to another format. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a table in SQL 2008 that has geometry (originally polygons) and I'd like to exchange that with someone who also has SQL Server.  I know that there are work arounds for moving a table from one SQL instance to another locally.  My question is - how can I export that table from SQL to a format that someone can ingest into their SQL Server instance? I have tried flat file, but that fails.

  • As long as you're both using SQL Server...

Spatial columns work fine with the SQL Server BCP utility. If you're using SQL Azure database (and the utility also works with SQL Server IIRC) and like GUI, there's the SQL Database Migration Wizard (http://sqlazuremw.codeplex.com/ ), which uses BCP file format. AFAIK SSIS's import/export Wizard works with spatial as well.
