Extending the server explorer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to add an extra node to the server explorer window? I want to add a service node under the Servers > [MyServer] node like what Crystal Reports does.

I found registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0Exp\ServerExplorer\Nodes that look promising but I don't know what base class or interface my custom node should implement. I used the IL Disassembler to take a look into the Crystal reports service node class. The class inherits Microsoft.VSDesigner.ServerExplorer.Node and implements ISerializable. It also has an attribute Microsoft.VSDesigner.ServerExplorer.UserContext.

I tried to do the same thing in my class but it doesn't work and I can't find any documentation. Is it possible to do?

I am using Visual Studio 2005 RC1 and VS SDK Sept CTP.

  • Currently Server Explorer does not provide any extensibility framework to add a node under "Servers".

If you are trying to add hetrogenous databases, you should be able to add thru the Data Connections node.

    Hope this helps.
