Visual Studio 2015 - Which compilers are covered under a Visual Studio 2015 License.

    Question

  • I work for a company that is tries to keep our projects up-to-date with recent versions of Visual Studio.  Through the years we have accumulated licenses all the way up to VS 2010. We are looking at purchasing and upgrading to VS 2015.

Our projects leverage 3rd party software that may not have a VS 2015 solution available yet, so I want to know if we purchase Visual Studio 2015 can we use the community version compiler within VS 2015?  It's my understanding that VS 2015 support previous compiler versions.

In this particular case we do not want to take on the burden of upgrading 3rd party solutions to VS 2015.  So I want to know if we never purchased a 2012 or 2013 licenses, are we allowed to use the community edition's compiler and only work from Visual Studio 2015.

  • Hi Joe-Nathen,

My understanding is that your proejct was the VS2010 project, you want to know that whether you could update it to VS2015, am I right?

If we want to upgrade a old VS project to the high VS2015 version, we have to think about the VS2015's compatibility.

In addition, the VS2015 community version is free, so you could use the VS2015 community version without the VS2012/VS2013 license. But it has the specific requirement and limitations. I think you could get more useful information here.

So you would check that whether your company really meets the requirmenet for the VS2015 community version if we make sure that the VS2015 supports your projects.

Of course, for other high VS2015 version like the enterprise or pro versions, we need to buy the license.

    Best Regards,
