Visual Studo 2015 - The Project cannot be created / Excel designer cannot be activated RRS feed

  • Question

  • My OS = Windows 10 Pro Version 1607 Build 14393.321)

I have run VS 2015 (Version 14.025431.01 Update 3) for some time now without any problem. Recent project is an "Excel 2013 and 2016 VSTO Workbook". Yesterday I installed the latest version of Office 365 (with Excel version 16.0.7329.1017) and since then when trying to open the Excel Designer I got the message "Excel designer cannot be activated.". When trying to create a new VSTO Workbook project I got the message "The project cannot be created." Not sure if this has anything to do with the Office 365 update but that's the only thing I have changed before this problems started.

I have checked with a variety of foras and found no answer. And yes, I have checked that the TrustCenter button inactivate AddIns is unchecked and that COM AddIn "Visual Studio Tool for Office Design - Time Adaptor for Excel" is checked.

I also tried to install VS 2015 on a brand new computer where the only software installed is Office 365 (same Excel version as above) and got exactly the same problems.

I cannot find any hint from the VS logfile.

I would very much appreciate any tips on how to solve the problems.

  • Hi BStockman,

This forum is discussing Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor.

Your issue is related to VSTO develop, I will move this thread to corresponding forum for a professional answer.

  • Hi,

What is the detail information about the error?

I suggest you follow the link

Project cannot be created because the Word Visual Studio Design Time Adaptor Add-In or Excel Visual Studio Design Time Adaptor Add-In is not working correctly

Besides, in the new computer, do you install VSTO Runtime?

I suggest you install the VSTO Runtime Redistributable

    You could download form https://www.microsoft.com/en-sg/download/details.aspx?id=48217

  • Hello,

There is absolutely no details about the error. Just the window with the message "The project cannot be created" or
"Excel designer cannot be activated." Would be very useful if there where any information about the reason for this.

The first link you refer to is where you shall check if the right settings are done. I have already done this without any improvements.

The second link is the installation of the VS Office Tools. I have, I think, the latest version (14.0.23928.0) on both computers.

  • Hi

I am also having the same problem. I was prompted to update Office 365 this morning.

Since then I have been unable to open the excel designer within Visual Studio 2015. I get the same error message "Excel Designer cannot be activated". Currently repairing my instance of Visual Studio, but given the earlier replies I am not holding out much hope.

My next step is to see if I can roll back the latest office update. If that doesn't work then I'm also out of ideas :S

  • I started with downgrading to the October 4 release (1609 build 7369.2024). This did not solve the problem.
Continued to downgrade to September 13 release (1607 build 7167.2060) and, voila, problem solved. Excel designer is now working and I can create new Excel projects. Automatic updates of Office 365 disabled. Guess I have to check at the web site https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt592918.aspx to find out when there is newer versions and try that. Would be very useful if Microsoft could inform in which future Office 365 release exactly this bug is fixed.

    Thanks!

      Bernhard.

  • Hi,

I also confirm - after downgrading to build 7167.2060 it works again.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks a ton! This was driving me crazy and your note pointed me to a solution. I agree that it would be useful if Microsoft could tell us when it is fixed!

  • Downgrading Office resolves the issue.

The temporary workaround is to roll-back to a previous version of Office and disable automatic Office updates.

     1. Open Excel > File > Account > Update Options > Disable Updates

     2. Note of your Office version under Office Updates

     3. Keep reverting to the previous version of Office 2013 / 2016 until issue is resolved:
         Start on Step 2: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2770432

In my case, I went from 6965.2115 (December 13, 2016) to 6965.2105 (November 8, 2016)... but issue persisted.

Then down to 6965.2092 (October 11, 2016).. and ISSUE RESOLVED!

    ------------
As of Dec. 2016, there's no official Microsoft fix.

Here's the open BUG at Microsoft. Anyone facing this frustration, please up vote to voice your concerns so that Microsoft can take priority on this:
