Customizeable Right Click Option (Kedar) - 12/13/2006 6:57 AM PST RRS feed

  • By: Kedar

    Hi,

Some how I have a strange feeling that my performance(speed) has slowed down
with Blend in compared to the EID.
Most of the time I feel like there should be some (more) option to choose
from on right click. EID was a lot better in this sense where atleast style
    was available on right click.
One thing that comes to my mind is why not go for a right click customize
menu like Autodesk's Maya, where we can have our own right clik options.
I am sure there ll b ebetter options as well but as of now I think Maya has
the best right click customize option.

The other thing is why is the right click options are not available in the
    code view.
Atleast the basic Copy/ cut/ paste options should be made available for
    God's shake.
Some one please tell me why there is no such option on right click?

This is so ridiculous and irritating....

    a) Hit Tab or F4 to hide all the palettes and work in full design / xaml
view (F4 only in XAML view since Tab has a different purpose in a text
editor). You will note that the property grid is presented in a special
"space saver" mode so you still make minor edits.
    b) Expression Blend is not a 3d authoring tool. So it is not entirely fair
to compare nifty Maya features to Blend.
    c) The double click to hide palettes is a great idea, that I had proposed
some time back. However, it did not make the v1 cut.
    d) By optoin to save workspace, I am guessing you mean custom workspaces.
Today, we only support two workspaces - Design and Animation. However, any
changes that you make to these two workspaces should be persisted across
Blend sessions. Are you not seeing this?

    Thanks,
    -Unni

    Howdy...

I think the menu items for style were removed as it was felt that they were
causing confusion, which I can see the validity in it, but agree with you
that it would be really nice to have the option to customise it. I know they
are still working on this at the moment, which I think they just need to sort
the terminology out. I still think it (Blend) is better then EID, by along,
    long way.

The XAML editor is still a work in progress all though I would assume that
they have finalised the feature set for release 1.

[UNNI: Can you let us know what the plans are for Release 1, XAML Editor?]

A lot of people are thinking the same thing about missing commands etc with
the XAML editor, but again I say: this is just Beta 1, with another release
    due soon.

I personally am glad they released it as is and look forward to the next
release which I am hoping will see greater improvements again in the XAML
    editor.

Can you put the customise suggestion in connect please... I will second
    this, it would be great.

    Cheers

    Hi Kedar,

Are you talking about the XAML editor or the design surface?

    Hi Unni,
Actually I was talking about a bit of both the design and editor interface.

    Hi Kedar,

We are not doing any more more on the XAML code editor front. However, I am
surprised that you are having trouble with the design surface front - that
is one area where we will absolutely fix such issue. Can you give me a repro
that does not work? Please note that if you try to right click on a blank
document, you don't get a context menu - that is an issue that is known.
However, if you draw a button and click on it, you should be getting a
    context menu.

    Thanks,
    -Unni

    Hi Brennon,

    Thanks for that response.
Its good to know that they are working on a customizeable option.
Actually I just feel like whatever be the application the UI must be robust
    enough to have these things:

1)the option to work entirely in a full screen view that could be either a
full screen design view or full screen xaml editor view.

2)the Autodesk Maya like right click option comes handy in a full screen
view setup as we can almost access all the functionalities/properties through
    the right click menu.

3)why not give a middle mouse option as well, so much could be donen on the
middle mouse button especially while interacting with 3d models in side the
    Blend.

4)the panels should have 'auto hide' as well in adition to the Float/Dock
option or should have something like a grid splitter click to hide like Adobe
    Flash etc.

5)option to save the work space

I can add more to this list but anyway its really nice to know that
Microsoft ll take care of certain aspects and come up with some innovative UI
    options in the next release.

    Thanks,

    Howdy Kedar,

--> Its good to know that they are working on a customizeable option.

I think I termed it incorrectly in my reply, and what I was trying to say
was that from a few of the previous posts, I had read that the MS dev team
were still coming to grips with what should be on the right click menu
(terminology wise). I would doubt that they are working on a customizable
right click option at this stage of the release, but again I think it is a
    great suggestion.

My oppologies for not being clearer with my response, but I stand by what i
said with regards to the UI and the features getting better and better as
time goes by, and hopefully we will see the customization implemented in the
    future.

    Take it easy
