Can sharepoint desinger consume wcf data service? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am thinking to change my wcf data service based on ado.net data service because It seems that sharepoint designer does not understand.

I can use VS 2010 to develop it external list but I just want my clients to use sharepoint designer to do themself so I can only take care of the service

However If I do not use wcf data service, it look like that I have to do a lot of coding for the service itself

Could anyone please tell me how to use sharepoint designer to talk to the wcf data service, or other alternative approach?

    Thank you in advance

  • Yes it is possible. You can create WCF service and create a External content type pointing datasource to WCF Service.

    Go through following link.

    hope this helps.

I did start my wcf service in that approach, However, You may end up modifying your services, everytime your clients require different data to display, or you have to create every single methods for each entity or join between entities. Put it other way is that you can not take advantage the ado.net data service offer, Considerring that you have 100 tables in the data base. What happen if you need to getting data from different tables?

WCF based on ado.net data model, you can query all sort of things in clients side, you only need to modifiy the service if the data base has been changed

Can someone from sharepoint designer team confirm that this is a sharepoint designer lacking funcnality to consume ODATA feed. Or that there could  be a market for RSS reader for odata feed?
