ADF v1 : Integration run time set up RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello All,

As per my understanding , only 1 integration run time can be installed on a virtual machine which can be connected to only 1 ADF v1 via its key.

SO ideally it is 1 to 1 mapping of an integration run time and a data factory v1.

Is there any way by which 1 integration run time be used in 2 different ADF v1's ?

In ADF v2 there is a concept of gateway sharing but my query is w.r.t ADF v1.

SO every time a new ADF v1 is created would I have to set up a new virual machine and new Integration run time?

  • Hi Nandan,

The name mentioned in the scrrenshots are Node name and not the VM name where integration runtime is installed.

Someone must have specified the same node name while installing integration runtime on both VM's. Normally node name is automatically populated as VM name, but the node name field is editable and any value can be specified as node name value.

  • Hi Nandan Hegde,

Unfortunately this feature is not going to be supported in the ADF v1 anymore, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

If you would like to use this feature, you will have to move to the ADF v2 version.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you

  • Hi Nandan,

You are correct only 1 integration run time can be installed on a virtual machine which can be connected to only 1 ADF v1 via its key. It is a 1 to 1 mapping of an integration run time and a Data factory v1. In order to have 1 IR to many ADF's, the possible option is to migrate to ADF V2.

  • Hi Kranthi,

If that is the case, can you please explain the below scenario:

So how come the same VM: SEAPDMG1 is mapped to 2 different ADF v1's and both are online.

  • Hi Nandan,

I see a difference in the version of both the IR's 1st screen-print has version - 3.19.7144.1 and the second one has 3.19.7163.1. Could you please confirm if they are the same IR hosted in same machine?

Here is the doc which explains about the considerations for using Data Management Gateway.

    • A single instance of data management gateway can be used for multiple on-premises data sources. However, a single gateway instance is tied to only one Azure data factory and cannot be shared with another data factory.
    • You can have only one instance of data management gateway installed on a single machine. Suppose, you have two data factories that need to access on-premises data sources, you need to install gateways on two on-premises computers. In other words, a gateway is tied to a specific data factory

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi,

In ADF V2 it is possible to share the same integration runtime (on a VM) with two different environment i.e. dev ADF and prod ADF but if i am not wrong we can not install two integration runtime on a single machine unless that machine is partitioned and running with more than on Operating System installed with one integration runtime each of the OS, so when we install integration runtime and add it to the ADF then we can assume it as ADF with one node and can scale out it by adding more than one node.

    Hope it clear now.

    Cheers,

  • Hello Kranthi,

    Sorry for the confusion.

The IR was getting updated when I had taken the 1st screenshot.

    PFB the latest ones:

Both the IR versions are the same and on the same VM: SEAPDMG1 and both the ADF pipelines are running successfully from the same IR.

And @Amit : The VM has only 1 OS and it is not partitioned.

  • Hi Nandan,

Apologizes for the late response and thank you for sharing the detials.

Could you also please provide the steps that you have followed to share the same IR in 2 v1 ADF's?

  • Thanks Priya, for sharing your insights. Yes, that might be only possibility seen here that both nodes have been named same.

@Nandan: Here is the doc for Data Management Gateway - High Availability and Scalability Preview in which you can see how the nodes can be renamed. As mentioned earlier sharing of IR in ADFv1 is not supported. In order to use the feature of sharing IR, the only way is to upgrade to ADFv2.

Thanks much for bringing this point, since this has been a question for many ADFv1 users and these conversations will help understand better. :)
