Visual Studio 2011 Developer Preview and Workflow .NET Framework 4 Platform Update 1 - can they coexist? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was using the Platform Update 1 for Workflow StateMachine

After installing the Visual Studio 2011 Developer Preview (which was supposedly capable of running side by side), I ran into issues when trying to open a project targeting Framework 4.01 from VS2010:

specifically the compilation error: activityxamlservices does not contain a definition for initializecomponent

I tried reinstall of KB2495593 patch to no avail.

I tried reinstall of NDP40-KB2478063-x64 --> I get a message "KB2478063 does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your computer"

Is VS2011 dev preview capable of running side by side with Platform Update 1?

If not, what is the recommended recovery procedure? I've uninstalled VS2011 Dev preview and still cant reinstall of KB2478063

Answers

  • uninstalled MVC 4, NET 4.5, reinstalled VS2010, SP1, applying KB2478063 ...

    fingers crossed!!!

    ...

    applied KB2495593

It looks like I'm back in working order – I can create 4.0.1 state machine workflows and compile them again.

So, I guess the only way to run Visual Studio 2011 Developer Preview from my machine is on a VM ?

  • There is a bug with the Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview that causes a problem when .NET 4 Platform Update 1 is installed on the same machine.  The bug is caused by the build targets referencing .NET 4.5 types.

The bug has been fixed now and future releases of Visual Studio 11 will not have this problem.

As for fixing your machine I'm investigating now - I'll get back to you with the results shortly.

  • I would wait at least till RC to install VS11 on my day to day work machine.

I would install betas and previews on machines I can easyily pave or inside VMs.

    Have fun, and Shana Tova.
