Can we load balance Database servers for Performance? SharePoint 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

Just like we can load-balance WFE1 and WFE2 servers for better performance in SharePoint:
    Is there a way
To do the same for our Database servers? As of now I have a failover mirrored server but it only helps in case of our db server failure. What I need is to load-balance these DB servers so about 50% of requests are served from each server.

    Thanks.

  • You can't load balance them in the same way as you do a WFE.  But if you have a cluster or are doing failover mirroring you can set it up so that you use two different instances of SQL and spread your content and services across the two instances.  Then have each instance mirror to the other SQL server.  That way each SQL server is hosting one active instance and one passive instance.  Individual pieces of content will only come from one SQL server, but it will spread the performance load across both servers instead of having one server only act as the passive failover.
