SSRS Report builder - "failed to preview report" the request failed with an empty response RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I'm experiencing some issues building reports and wondered if anyone could help explain what these errors may refer to?

I'm using a standard SSRS setup on a new server with all the default values (default URL, no azure or anything). I've set up a local instance in SQL Server using all the defaults, although ideally would want to use a data source from elsewhere.

When trying to preview reports I'm getting the error  "failed to preview report" the request failed with an empty response.

I've managed to go through setting up the datasource and datasets and build a report with all the values pulling through in the builder window - both data from a local source and a second server shows, so I'm not sure what is causing the preview error. As it happens with a local table I don't think it can be network access but not sure what else it could be. It also means I can't upload the report (same error).

I did notice when creating the datasource that there are two pages with a 'test connection' option, one of them says 'connection successful' but the second one also displays a 'request failed with an empty response' error.

What does 'Empty response' refer to? Permissions/connection? Firewall block? I'm sure it's a simple answer but I haven't been able to find any clear guidance for this error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS - if someone can move this to a better forum that would be great. No SQL/SSRS forums were listed anymore.
