Why my project publish button is disabled? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I created a project based on existing template. The publish button for this project is disabled. If I copy the whole content to a new created file, that file publish works ok. Can you tell me why?

    Thanks,

    Rachel

  • Have you tried to Save the template first, when Save as dialouge box comes which gives option for saving on the Server.

  • If you have an existing project and would like to bring it into Project Server you can import it.  The reason that it works when copied into a new file is that you are saving it into the server.

When importing project the project level codes, task level codes and resources will be replaced with server values. There is a wizard that will walk you through the process.  If you are using MS Project 2007, the import project into server link is in the Enterprise tools at the end of the tools menu.  If using 2010 it can be found on the file -- info (I think) area.

  • Thanks Ellen. After I bring the file to project server, the button is enabled. I didn't find the import menu in 2010 though.

  • Really need the Project 2010 steps here (if someone has them).  The "Import" is no where to be found .. I did find documentation which said:

1  open project professional 2010 connecting to the pwa server where you want the .mpp to reside

2  then frn fron project pro 2010 open the .mpp itself

3  go to the "File" tab  "Info and select "Publish"

Thing is the Publish button (icon) is gray'ed out (I'm signed in as Project Admin)

Whoever wrote those directions gave you bum advice.  The proper steps to import the project are:

    1.  Launch Microsoft Project 2010 and connect to Project Server.

    2.  Open the MPP file that you want to import.

    3.  Click File > Save & Send.

    4.  On the right side of the page, leave the ??Use Import Wizard?? option selected and click the Save As button.

Microsoft Project 2010 will display the Import Project Wizard sidepane on the left side of the page.

    5.  Work through each step of the 5-step wizard.

The final step requires you to save your project in Project Server 2010.  After this, you can click File > Publish.  Hope this helps.
