Uninstalling Microsoft.NET Framework Programs RRS feed

  • Question

  • Situation: We are novices, retired, living in a rural community. I got a window on my screen indicating the remaining disk drive was low. Cliking on it took me to the Add/Remove screen.  I am setup to receive automatic updates and use the express (recommended) install method. I found a Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 SP2 186MB, a Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 SP2, 170MB and a Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5, no size listed with a sublist listing of a Hotfix KB95395, whatever that is. I don't know what these programs are and a friend suggested I go to this site and seek help.  We don't do or know how to do development work, we just email and work with pictures with our children.

I thought I could use the Add/Remove program to remove these, but when I clik on the 3.5 NET there is no box that says Change or Remove and there is no program size shown. My logic tells me I have to remove this before I can remove lower numbered versions? But when I clik on the line nothing happens.

I did clik on the 3.0 version and the Remove box but got this message: Microsoft.Net Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 cannot be uninstalled because it will affect other applications that are installed. For more information, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkld=91126.  This led to a generic web page.

I don't know what to do but I suspect these .NET Framework programs were installed automatically by the Update settings I have. Between them they have eaten up over 350 MB of my harddrive on this old E Systems PC.

Can anyone help me? I hope I have cliked the right forum category and forum, if not please excuse me.

  • Hi W7wll,

Referring to removal of any the versions of the .NET Framework, it depends on the applications and OS that are ran on your PC.

For applications, if you have some application based on .NET Framework 3.5 on your PC, you cannot remove .NET Framework 2.0, .NET Framework 3.0 and .NET Framework 3.5 because .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 are the prerequisite of .NET Framework 3.5. So the three .NET Frameworks cannot be removed.

For OS, here is a useful blog that shows what version of .NET Framework is included in what version of OS. See: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/03/14/mailbag-what-version-of-the-net-framework-is-included-in-what-version-of-the-os.aspx

Please check the above helpful information before you decide to remove any .NET Framework. Then try Mohamed's suggestion to use .NET Framework Cleanup tool to remove them and reboot your PC.

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen
