Create informational log alert In Azure, only for Unexpected host failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • Yesterday in our Azure production environment a virtual machine got restarted due to unexpected host failure. We understand that this kind of error occurs at the time of Host update and this is inevitable. But is there any way by which we can create an alert which will notify us at the time of any host failure of a virtual machine?

  • Hello ,

You can use azure log analytics heartbeat alert feature in this case.

Please follow these steps for implementing in your infrastructure,

    1. create a log analytics workspace if you dont have one already
    2. create it's agent in VM which you want to monitor
    3. Goto log analytics workspace's logs tile in azure portal and run the query "heartbeat" / or leverage "uptime"
    4. Once you see data related to your VM in the logs then goto log analytics workspace's alerts tile and create an alert (which sends mail when machine goes down).

  • Is it possible to create the alert only at the time of host failure?

  • If your intention is to fire an already created alert at the time of host failure then above mentioned comment is the answer for it.
If your intention is to create a new alert at the time of host failure then we may accomplish it but I don't think it is appropriate to create a new alert at the time of host failure because that newly generated alert would get fired only after next host failure.
    Hope this clarification helps!!
