Visual Studio - Reporting / Exporting from Architecture Tools

    Question

  • Is there a means to Report / Export / Publish from Architecture Tools to some standard format like HTML, PDF, WORD, etc... ? Other than just simple print or export to image. As an example for clarification, we'd like to create documentation from a UML model prepared with Architecture tools in Visual Studio.

    Thank u

  • Hi moital,

In Visual Studio, we can save modeling diagrams in read-only formats like images.

It seems that it is by design.

    Reference:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd554948(VS.100).aspx

Like the guide of this tool here:

    http://vsararchitectguide.codeplex.com/

The recommended method is to simply post ideas to the Discussions page or to contact the Rangers at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/ee358786.aspx.

You could start a discussion in the above site, maybe you could get better response from the  Visual Studio Architecture Tooling team.

    Best Regards,

    Jack

  • We are aware of the option to save diagrams as images. However, is there an option to export in some report format with meta data and template or similar ? Maybe a 3rd party tool / extension ?

Also noticed revere engineering from code to diagram isn't yet included in 2015, only in 2012/3. I would guess it is generally planned to continued also to 2015 and further at certain point of time, same as BI module is expected to be... Right

  • Hi moital,

    Thanks for your friendly response.

Maybe you want to paste a sequence diagram to your word document like gazbg's reply here:

    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/6c6f5d78-cc46-4637-a659-83f7ad14be5f/exporting-vs2010-sequence-diagrams?forum=vsarch

Reference “Preparing a Diagram for Presentation” here:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd409405.aspx

I also did some research about it, sorry for that I didn't find other extension tools, actually you know that we also didn't support other 3rd party tool, so like my previous reply, if possible, you could start a discussion with the Visual Studio Architecture Tooling team experts. Maybe they could provide good suggestions for you.

Of course, you could also submit a feature request for the VS IDE features: You could submit this feature request: http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio.
The Visual Studio product team is listening to user voice there. You can send your idea there and people can vote.

    Sincerely,

    Jack
