general query regarding group policies RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello.

I am trying to better understand how the group policy objects are saved to the registry (in windows 7). For example if I enable the option of preventing new device driver installations. I have tracked down the keys to a path such as

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects\{93A24FA1-CFFC-414A-BF69-66FB6277C792}Machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Restrictions\DeniedPolicy

however I can't figure out where the value {93A24FA1-CFFC-414A-BF69-66FB6277C792} is read from. The policy editor clearly reads something somewhere to obtain this number when it is opened, and I would like to know where it comes from/ saves to.

To make matters more confusing, this value changes everytime the policy editor is opened.

    Thanks in advance
