Can't download microsoft/windowsservercore image RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm consistently getting this error and download failure:

    PS C:\Users\Admin> docker run -ti microsoft/windowsservercore powershell
    Unable to find image 'microsoft/windowsservercore:latest' locally
    latest: Pulling from microsoft/windowsservercore
    3889bb8d808b: Downloading [==================================================>]  4.07 GB/4.07 GB
    423d66441981: Downloading [==================================================>] 1.203 GB/1.203 GB
    C:\Program Files\Docker\docker.exe: read tcp 192.168.0.11:60315->72.21.81.200:443: wsarecv: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host..
    See 'C:\Program Files\Docker\docker.exe run --help'.

    I presume this is happening because of my slow connection speed (1Mbps). The hello-world:nanoserver sample downloads and works fine.

    I don't mind downloading this as a BITS job, but I'll need to know two things:

    1. The download URL
    2. Where to save the file on my Hyper-V 2016 host server

  • So we see here docker is saying that something is ending the connection while it tries to connect to 72.21.81.200.

    We can see in these two github "issues" that the problem was caused by an anti-virus software. Is that applicable in your case?

    https://github.com/docker/machine/issues/2318

    https://github.com/docker/toolbox/issues/272

    Also, to your knowledge is there anything else that's different now than when you were able to get the small nano-server file?

  • I think it must be because of my substandard connection speed. I'm doing a

    docker pull microsoft/windowsservercore
    right now on a 4Mbps network, and it's about a third of the way through without any problem so far.

    The nanoserver download goes fine on my 1Mbps network both before and after the windowsservercore failure. I think their server must not be seeing my activity for some reason and timing out.

    BTW, I've since learned that downloading an image as a single file isn't possible. The way to do that and move an image to another server/network is:

    docker pull
    docker save
    docker load

  • I am also experiencing severe issues downloading windowsservercore. More details on GitHub: https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/33667

  • That's pretty significant.
