Split an appointment item into two parts

Question

How can I split a selected appointment item into two parts using vba.  The appointment item is part of a series but I only want to affect the occurance not the series.  We are using this calendar as our employee schedule and have set up their shifts as reoccuring appointments.  So when an employee is sick we actually select the appointment accurance and split the appointment into two parts and enter another appointment that shows the sick day.  We are using outlook 2010
