Form stops refreshing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am working on an app in Microsoft Access 365 that will compare file lists from two different folders looking for dupes. The folder I am comparing against has 420,000+ files in it so I set up a progress bar control to give the user a way to track the process but my form stops refreshing at some random point in the routine so the progress bar freezes until the routine completes.

When I watch the routine execute, it looks like the form is loosing focus to the Access main window when the freeze happens.  The Windows Title Bar for the Access program pops up with a "Not Responding" message  and the form stops refreshing.

I tried adding me.SetFocus and me.Requery commands to the routine with no luck, once the focus jumps to the main Access window, the form does not update until the routine finishes.

Can anyone give me some guidance on what is going on here?

  • The "Not Responding" message usually means that the CPU/Memory has maxed out. One thing that sometimes helps is to put a DoEvents command in whatever loop is running. DoEvents releases Access's death grip on the computer and lets other events share the resources.

  • Hi Bill,

Thank you for your fast and helpful reply. I added the DoEvents command to the loop where the progress bar is being updated and that fixed the issue.

  • Glad I could help, Mike. I always tell my users who are new to Access to not panic if they see the "Not Responding" message.
