SQL Server Express 2014 Compatible with Visual Studio 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm currently using Visual Studio 2008 and accessing databases on a server running Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server Express 2008 R2.

I have a Windows Server 20012 (not R2) with SQL Server Express 2014 on it.  Should I be able to access a database created on this server with SQL Server Express 2014 from within my Visual Studio 2008?

  • Hi,

I think you will have compatibility issues doing so.

You can try it though, Wont cost you any thing.

Alternatively, You can install the latest version of SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio.

    Thanks

  • You can not use the "Server Explorer" of Visual Studio to connect to SQL Server 2012/2014 to make changes, but for this you can use SSMS = SQL Server Management Studio 2014 Express.

All other kind of data access like ADO.NET or Entity Framework will work without any issue.

  • In your case there probably won't be any problems because most features used in SLQ 2008 are supported in newer versions of SQL server. Problems would probably happen if you used VS2013 with SQL 2014 and wanted to use SQL 2008.
