XP Pro and IIS5 will not serve ASP/ASP.NET RRS feed

I've tried almost everything I can think of and I can not get IIS5 on Windows XP Pro to server ASP or ASP.NET pages. I keep getting the error: "Server Application Error The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance." I've reinstalled the .NET Framwork to ensure everything was properly registered in IIS as well as ensuring all the IIS patches were installed. I am running Zone Alarm, but it will still not work even when shutdown. I tried to see a more detailed explanation, but for whatever reason the "Show Friendly HTTP Errors" in IE, will not uncheck itself. I can uncheck it, but as soon as I go back in it's rechecked. I've tried to manually force it in the registry, but it actually show as being unchecked and won't allow me to change it anyway and says "Error writting the value's new contents" Any suggestions to get ASP and ASP.NET pages running? Normally I use my live server as the test server, but for reasons unknown MAcromedia Dreamweaver keeps "Loading Datatbase Schema" and the solution is to run a local test server. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff, Can you copy the relevant errors from the event log (start>run>eventvwr.msc) and paste them here?

That's the thing. When I try to access the page and get that error ,there are no errors recorded in the Application log, or the system log.

Are you checking the event log on your local machine? or the test server? You need to check the event log on the server. Cheers Ken

The local machine is the test server. Or at least that is what I am trying to do. My live server is running IIS6 on W2K3. I am trying to make my local workstation act as the test server as Dreamweaver has issues with trying to make the remote/live server the test server. So to answer you question I checked the log on my workstation as that is where IIS5 is installed.

XP Pro is IIS 5.1 not IIS 5.0, just check again the following a) simple html, working ? b) asp page ? working ? if not what's the error msgs ? event log ? after we fix the above then we move on to asp.net.

Html works ok. I created a file with bolded text and it worked fine. Both ASP and ASP.NET produce the following error: Server Application Error The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance. Neither the application/security/system log has recorded anything related to this problem when I get the above error.

Yeah my ASP test file was a hello world. Here is what was in the IIS log files: 20:34:29 127.0.0.1 GET /Default.aspx 500 20:34:35 127.0.0.1 GET /test.html 200 20:35:57 127.0.0.1 GET /asptest.asp 500 Before I posted here I already re-installed IIS twice. I'm at a loss as to how to make this work. Any more ideas.

Try one more time - a) uninstall IIS (safe or normal mode) b) Remove files and folders %windir%/system32/inetsvr/ /inetpub/ %windir%/iisx.log (x=5 for w2k, 6 for XP, Win03) (use safe mode to delete) c) reboot, reinstall IIS, repatch machines

Do you have .Net framework Installed? If yes,try to find in Windows\microsoft.net\framework\V1.XXXX directory file named aspnet_regIIS.exe and run it to register IIS with Net framework. Hope it'll help. Greets
