logging or monitoring of media foundation / media session activity RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there an API or a tool that allows monitoring or trace the activity inside media foundation resp. media sessions?

    For example:

    Finalizing sink XY

    Shutting down sink XY

    etc.

  • The upcoming SDK release will include a tool (mftrace.exe) to capture detailed traces of MF. The OS event viewer also has a limited set of traces under 'Event Viewer (local) > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MediaFoundation' (also MediaFoundation-Platform, MediaFoundation-Performance, MediaFoundation-PlayAPI, MediaFoundation-MFReadWrite). To show these logs, the option 'Show Analytic And Debug Logs' must have been selected in the 'View' menu.

  • Select "Enable Log" in the "Actions" pane on the right. You can also hit "Refresh" in the same pane after the test scenario is run to force the Event Viewer to show the traces.

  • I just reviewed the systems logs, but these analytic logs are empty. Do I have to switch on something?

  • For info, MFTrace has been released as part of the latest Windows SDK. There is some documentation on MSDN and we are preparing a series of posts about tracing on the MF blog.
