Migrating multiple files from one instance to another RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am in the process of re-designing a new SharePoint website and will be moving files from an older website into the newer Sharepoint website. Is there any simpler way to migrate the files rather than have to "copy" and "paste". Appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

  • Here is an option or 2:
    1.  2 browser windows with each doc library in "explorer view"... drag and drop between them
    2.  if there aren't too many libraries - save the library as a template and select "include content" - there are size limitations here though

Those were the 1st two that came to mind that would not require coding.  If you are up to the task, use powershell to write a recursive procedure that copies all files from Library A to Library B using the WEB Services.

  • I believe you can also you WebDAV to set up a drive letter to one site and a drive letter to another and transport the files that way as well.

I thinks Jeff's recommendation to use the list template is the best.  It all depends on how many files need to be moved.

  • You can use "Manage Content and structure" menu option in "Site Actions". If you dont see "Manage content and structure" under "Site Actions" activate "Office SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure" under "Site collection features" and then activate "Office SharePoint Server Publishing" under "Site Features".
The only limitation of "Manage content and structure" is that you can move a discussion board items to another discussion board.
    Hope this helps.
