The SELECT permission was denied error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a user trying to open an application but they get the following error message:

The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'abc123', database 'XYZ', schema 'dbo'

    What should I check?

Please note that the user (Jane Williams) was previously named Jane Jones.  Her name was renamed in active directory.

In SQL, her user account is Jane Williams.

    Please advise.

  • Assuming she is connecting via her AD account and if it was renamed, i.e. from jwilliams to jjones or similar you'll need to change this also on the SQL Server. Ideally if you are using AD groups to assign permissions then it should not be a problem as long as she is still a member of the correct groups. Make sure the login on the SQL Server matches in AD and that the correct permissions are assigned in SQL Server as required. You could script up the original logins/users for jwilliams and then replace with jjones and then drop the old one once you have tested it out.
