Auto Number Systems for Generating Transaction Numbers. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a requirement something like this.

    1. We have a list which is a master setting for a application number count. It have Month, Year, Number columns. The Month and Year will be of current month and year and the number will be an auto number incremented and updated after each new order is placed by a customer.

    2. there is a customer master list and a "order " transaction list.

    3. When a new order is saved, the list (mentioned in 1.) is taken and the number is formatted in "MM-YYYY-XXXX" format and saved as a column in the order list. Meanwhile a workflow will update the "Number" column of the list (specified in 1.) to make the next order number available for the "order" list.

    4. This architecture we are following as per the ASP.NET transaction numbering we used to do previously with storing the master numbering systems in a database master table.

    5. Is this architecutre a best practice and will not create any clashes in the numbers when the number of users increases?

    Please advice, Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

If you didn't worry about the performance for SharePoint server, you can do it of course.

Another way is to store all information in database. And the SharePoint site is only used to dispaly all data accroding to your requirement.

You can import data to SharePoint with Business Connectivity Services.

Regarding the BCS introduction you can see the following document.
