Deploy SharePoint 2013 in Azure VM with Azure SQL Database as backend RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are planning to recommend hosting SharePoint 2013 in Windows Azure using Virtual Machines.  Part of the topology, we are recommending to provision the following servers:

    1. One VM box for SharePoint 2013 Server

    2. One VM box for Windows AD DS.

My question is, for SQL Server, can we use the Azure SQL Database (DaaS) offering and use it as the backend for the SharePoint to be setup on Azure VM, since in all architectural diagrams, I see a separate box for SQL Server and none recommends using SQL Database option from Azure.

Would someone be able to share their experience or confirm if its possible or not?  Thanks and Appreciate your time.

    Karthik.

  • Hi,

SharePoint 2013 does not support using an Azure SQL Database as a substitute for a server computer running SQL Server. As a best practice, we recommend using a dedicated database server for SharePoint.

In addition, for redundancy, I recommend you to create two VMs for each role, add each pair of VMs for a specific role to the same availability set and add all the VMs into an affinity group.
