In Azure File storage, how to delete a file locked by an SMB client?

    Question

  • Hello,

I have a file in Azure File storage that I cannot delete. The portal returns the following message:

    Failed to delete file 'myfilename'
Error: The specified resource may be in use by an SMB client.

I signed out from my local computer in order to close all hung processes, but keep getting the same error message when trying to delete the file.

Thank you for any suggestions you might have.

  • Hello Marc,

Thank you for contacting us. It looks like there are some clients accessing the share.

Please check if there is any other client accessing the share?

Are you deleting this file from the portal?

Can you delete the share and recreate it and do the testing again?

Create another test file in the same account for testing purpose and see if that is also showing this behavior.

  • Hello,

    In addition to Dipin’s suggestions.

If you haven’t tried this already, please try the Azure File Service REST API to delete the file in file share, for more details check given link.
