SharePoint returns an error after transferring the file RRS feed

  • Question

  • When attempting to migrate a file, one of the following message is displayed:

SharePoint returns an error after transferring the file. You should retry to transfer this document again.
Could not retrieve file size information from SharePoint.
Could not retrieve the file correctly because SharePoint returned an empty file. This may be caused by a corrupted file.

  • This error happens because ShareGate Desktop received an error from SharePoint while transferring a file. ShareGate Desktop automatically retries the operation up to 5 times, but after that it skips the document and returns this error.
It may happen when many big files are transferred at the same time and SharePoint has trouble handling them all. Also, it is possible that the source file was already corrupted and therefore cannot be accessed by ShareGate Desktop as SharePoint migration cannot process it correctly.
    Solution
You can retry to migrate your file again at a later time. If you still encounter this issue, try to avoid migrating multiple big files at the same time.

To check if the source file is corrupted, download a local copy of the file with your browser and/or SharePoint Designer. If neither of these works, this most likely means that the file is corrupted in SharePoint and cannot be retrieved by Sharegate.
