Azure Data Lake or Blob storage? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

In both a Data Lake and a Blob storage you can store unstructured data (for example data from sensors). When do you choose for a Data Lake? What are the benefits?

  • Hi Ricardo,

In summary, Data Lake Store allows petabyte file sizes, high throughput (for example for IoT sensor data ingestion), and built-in Hadoop integration.  Azure Storage is more a generic store for many different use cases whereas Azure Data Lake is optimized specifically for doing big data analytics.

Also check out this great comparison table: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/data-lake-store/data-lake-store-comparison-with-blob-storage

  • To add to Jorg's reply and lift important aspects from the comparison table: Azure Data Lake Store is fully integrated with Azure Active Directory and allows you to set ACLs on files and folders, while Blob storage does not. ADLS also gives you true folders and files, while Blob storage is a key-value store where you "pretend" folders.
