Can I collect data using MS Loopback Adapter? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I often work on my protocol server on a disconnected laptop, so I use the MS Loopback adapter to make sure I have an active IP address. However when I do I find I am blind! I cannot grab traces with NetMon using the MS Loopback driver. Is this right? Or have I missed something?

  • You can't capture from the loopback adapter directly.  We use NDIS to capture packets and loopback traffic get's short cuircuted.  You might be able to redirect your local traffic using the ROUTE command to ship packets off to a router and then have the router send them back to you.  However this depends on how your application addresses the port but I have seen this work occasionally.

We understand this is an important feature but it's not technically very simple to solve.  We will continue to evaluate a solution as we move forward.
