content query webpart -audience targetting -need to give permission separately RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi
I have a content query webpart (which is an announcement roll up webpart).
Now, I put this webpart on home page,
But-I have around 40 departmental sites plus other unique permission sites.
From any sites from that 40 sites- If I want my announcement visible to whole company users-
I needed to do 2 step exercise-
1st- Assign Audience Name or// Group Name (an easy task for the end user)

2nd-Permission separately from item Menu->Shared With->Advanced->Stop inheriting Permission Permission (for item)->Grant Permission for "All Home Page visitors"->

Q- Can we simplify this process by any standard way ?

    Rgds/-

  • Audiences are not groups and can't be added to a SharePoint Group.  As I said Audiences and Permissions  are completely separate.  Having said that, yes you can assign permissions to items using a 2010 based workflow.  But I'm not sure if you can retrieve the Audience settings in a workflow so that you can determine how to set the permissions.

  • There is a setting in the Content Query Web part that tells it to include items that have no audience defined.  That would let you include all announcments that aren't targeted at a specific audience, so you wouldn't have to do step #1.  Step #2 would still be required since the default permissions on the list are not set to allow access to all users.  There is no real way to get around this since audience targeting has nothing to do with permissions.  Users need to both be in an audience used for targeting the item (or no audience) and have permission to view the item.

  • Hi Paul,
My user wants some short way from step 2 only.
    Alright,
Can I Handle that permission thing by some workflow..like If I added Audience Name, then that name should get automatic added to HomePage-Visitor Permission.

    Thanks /
