Remove Devices and Printers Icons (From Metadata) on Device Manager Uninstall RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys,

I would like to know if it's possible to remove the Devices and Printers Icons (Fig 1.) even when it's associated device is uninstalled via Device Manager (Fig 2.).

The device metadata  file (*********.devicemetadata-ms) can be installed using two methods:
        (1) Manually copying the file to the  "\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceMetadataStore\en-US" folder
              OR
        (2) Letting the INF file copy the metadata (the method we did).
Using method (2) the metadata (which holds the devices and printers icons) was installed, but when it is uninstalled via device manager Windows doesn't remove the metadata. Are there ways to remove it (via the INF file perhaps)?

Fig 1. Devices and Printers Icons

Figure 2. Uninstalling device via Device Manager

P.S. There seems to be no problem if the device is uninstalled through an uninstaller (we manually delete the metadata file). But when the device is uninstalled by Device Manager it bypasses our installer/uninstaller completely and the metadata file isn't removed by Windows.

    Regards,
    Michael
