How to install app without installing previous version? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have created a C# Windows store app version 1.0 in Windows 8 and uploaded in the Windows store, used by many users. Later, we have retargeted the same app to Windows 8.1 as version 2.0 and uploaded in the Windows Store. But in Windows store our version 1.0 app is always showing. If user wants to install our latest app version 2.0, first they have to install the version 1.0 app and check for updates then they have to install the latest version 2.0.

Is there is any way to install the latest version 2.0 app without installing the previous version?

How to display both the app (version 1.0 and v2.0) in Windows Store to install separately?

Kindly help us in resolving the above issues.

  • Hi Lidia,

    Thanks for your reply.

We have observed that the Store was displaying the V1.0 app since the cached page was not cleared properly. After WSReset.exe, Store is displaying the latest V2.0 properly and able to install properly.

  • What I understand from the description is - that v1.0 and v2.0 seem to be two different apps altogether.  Because , after you re-target your app to Windows 8.1, Create app package (with the box checked saying - "Include app names that already have packages") and associate with Windows Store for that app-name.

Then, when you need to select this app on the Store Portal  and then create a new release for the app for which you associate the project through Visual Studio.

In the "Packages" section, you will can upload the both Windows 8 and 8.1 packages for the Store. If you upload a new Windows 8 package, then it becomes and upgrade for your app for Windows 8 users - existing users should get a notification for upgrade and new users shall directly receive the new version on Windows 8 and 8.1 if they installing for the first time (or if the app is not present on the system).

Also, in the "Description" section, you shall see two distinct options for providing description for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 versions of the app.

You will need to maintain two different versions of the app - one targeting Windows 8.0 and the other 8.1 - if this is a requirement. Through above approach Windows 8.1 users who have the 8.0 targeted app will get a notification to upgrade the app (which should install the 8.1 version).

  • Hi Ashok,

Could you please clarify couple of things?

Are you seeing both version 1.0 and version 2.0 of Application in the Store?

What OS do you have on the machine you are seeing this on? Windows 8 or Windows 8.1?

Do you see version 1.0 of Application in the Store on the Windows 8.1 box?

Have you had version 1.0 installed before version 2.0 of Application was available?

    Thank you. Lidia
