Identifying vs Non-Identifying relationships. RRS feed

  • Question

  • An Identifying relationship includes the Parent PK as part of the child PK. Around my workplace tables are often implemented using surrogate keys:

    -----------------

TableNameID         --- Table (identity) PK of child

    -----------------

    Parent  PK

    Table item 1

    Table item 2

    Table item 3

    ....

What are the pluses and minuses (both theoretical and practical) of each approach?

    TIA,

  • Hi,

You may refer to Considerations for Identifying and Non-identifying Relationships section in the Defining and Managing Relationships (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee373856.aspx).

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you need more help.
