Windows Phone service discovery RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I'm trying to write an app that can dynamically discover services the network (machines running a piece of software).

Why is this so hard to do using the 7.1 SDK? UDP broadcast is not allowed apparently, there are no UPNP classes available for the phone and the UdpAnySourceMulticastClient doesn't appear to work (Works on local machine, but when deployed to a device the packets don't even hit my machine.... wtf?)

How the hell am I going to do this? Users don't want to input IP addresses and hostnames, I just want to present them with a list of machines to connect to.

  • Device discovery on Windows Phone has been discussed before, and it does not seem possible using the current API.

  • Its ridiculous, if WP7 ever wants to compete with the iOS then a basic feature like this needs to be implemented.
