September 06, 2013 Update. When does the World Explorer App Get Updated? RRS feed

  • Question

  • When does the World Explorer App Get Updated?

There was apparently a September 06, 2013 update to the Bing Maps imagery, but the World Explorer App STILL shows February 2013.

Why is there no Bing Maps World Explorer update?

Please kindly provide an answer. Thanks.

  • I suspect you are referring to the old Silverlight based Bing Maps World tour app. This app likely won't be updated, we are investigating alternatives that are not Silverlight based. In any case, here is a screenshot of all the imagery released in the past 1.5 year (113M SQ KM):

  • I'm actually looking into alternative ideas for this app. Currently I'm trying to decide between a dedicated website or a Windows Store app. I'm also looking at expanding upon this app to include additional data coverage information, rather than just imagery.

As for Streetside, we continue to capturing new streetside imagery although I don't believe any of it has been released to the Silverlight app. Note that the Silverlight streetside functionality never made it out of beta. We will likely hear some news around the future of streetside in Bing Maps in a couple of months. Check the Bing maps blog for an announcement.

  • Hi Ricky,

Thanks very much for the reply, map & info.

I didn't realise that, as you quote: "the old Silverlight based Bing Maps World tour app." was now actually old.

It would imply that it has been superseded with something else, but you mention that you are investigating alternatives, so that implies that no alternative has been developed yet.

Would it not actually make more sense to continue with the Silverlight software for the World Tour app, until such time an alternative is in place & ready to go? Flawed as it is (see below) I still appreciated the overlay updates.

For my own feedback on the current Silverlight/World Tour App., I always found it annoying that I could not enter coordinates into the Bing Map whilst having the World Tour Map ON & showing either Aerial or Satellite imagery overlays. If I did this the red/yellow overlays would disappear as would the Map Apps.

I would also like to know if Bing Maps/Microsoft will be doing further new StreetSide imagery? This project appears to have stalled.

Hopefully we continue to be informed (at least) when new satellite/aerial imagery appears in future.

    Best regards
