Azure PaaS - Azure Kubernetes Service - DR - How to?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Experts,

I understand in terms of IaaS we design a DR for VMs using Azure Site recovery services. How do we do DR for PaaS services like Azure Kubernetes Service? Is it managed by Microsoft?

    Please advice.

  • This would be PaaS service type specific. Some of PaaS services have built in support for DR (CosmosDB or Azure SQL Database), others require custom solutions (those accessible via public Internet typically include Traffic Manager as their component). As far as I understand, AKS does not have any built-in disaster recovery capabilities, so you would need to consider custom/third party solutions (e.g. Heptio Ark). Note that, considering that AKS does not charge for the master, you could simply deploy a "standby" AKS cluster in another region and then add/online nodes/deploy pods during a failover. Also, keep in mind that containers are by definition stateless - you would want to ensure that you implement replication/DR of the stateful components of your AKS implementation.

Ultimately, the approach you choose will be driven by the desired RTO/RPO.
