Visual Studio 2011 XAML Designer Always Crashes

    Question

  • Having tried installing Windows 8 Developer Preview on various devices I am continuously met with the XAML designer crashing in VS 2011. Is there a fix for this I have seen mentions on the internet of similar problems but no mentions of how to fix the problem. The error usually says

    An Unhandled Exception Has Occurred

    System.IO.FileLoadException
Assembly is still being loaded. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131016)

This error sometimes changes to failed to read from an ipc port the pipe has been ended as well as others. When you first start building an app it works fine but as soon as you build the app once it crashes continuously. I have tried this on a few laptops and a desktop and they all do the same thing. Please help me :)

  • Lots of known issues in the designer for the developer preview.  We've made lots of improvements for Beta.  Sorry, no real workaround for you currently though.  Sometimes reloading the project helps.

  • Lack of Blend support for XAML + this crash = Beta can't come soon enough.

  • Same issue seems to exist in beta (at least for me):

  • Hi CostasZ,

Have you tried the workaround posted on our team blog?  http://blendinsider.com/xaml/known-issue-xaml-designer-in-visual-studio-11-beta-crashes-on-launch-2012-03-07/

If that doesn't work for you, please feel free to contact me at Lori.Dirks (at) Microsoft so we can try to help you debug the issue.
