No custom forms for Shared Sharepoint folders in Outlook. RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I came across this little known glitch of using custom forms on Sharepoint Calendars or any other shared folders in Outlook. While I can specify a custom form to create an item or view/edit item in Outlook native calendar, tasks and contacts, this won't work on Sharepoint folders shared in Outlook.  On shared folders (Calendars, Tasks, Contacts) I can specify my custom form to be used with the property "when posting  items to folder, use" option.  And it will diligently use that custom form when creating new item.  But once the item is saved and synced with sharepoint, the attribute where it stores the reference to the custom form - Message Class- will "revert" back to default form.  So I would come along few minutes later to open the appointment item I just saved with my custom form.  There popup a default form and I am  scratching my head because I expected a custom form I just used to save that item.  Cant figure out why because there are no documentations available for this glitch - not good for business- so only way is to dig through other developers' pain through forums and come up with a realization.  I pasted the links to other folks frustrations.  Perhaps  a hot fix is due. Sharepoint/Outlook integration is a good capability but the useful feature that people want to use is not working?

  • The core problem is that your Message Class won't stick, as it'll be overwritten every time Outlook synchs with SharePoint as the items are essentially recreated every time AFAIK.

The message from Microsoft is to put your customizations in SharePoint, not Outlook.  Outlook is great to synch with standard SharePoint data, but you are in for a world of hurt if you start customizing fields or forms in linked SharePoint folders.

  • Eric, Thanks for the advise.   I learned it the hard way.  I wish there is a good document out there outlining the details of this Outlook/Sharepoint capability so people don't have go through try and fail approach.

  • Well, there really is no specific extensibility available for developers with Outlook/SharePoint integration.  Stssync is the closest that I can think of:

    Stssync Protocol

There's also this document that may or may not be helpful:
