error 400 The request hostname is invalid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Just insalled WSF on new hardware. and using an internal network

I've had a problem with url's . I can access the admin page on client computer using the ip address and the computer name.

When I try to access newly created application I cannot access them using the IP address nor the domain name (http://sales:port no) , I get an error 400 in the browser.

Then i added a host file on client and I could then access the new application by the domain name i.e

    http://sales:port no.

So the question is why cannot I access by ip address ?

I'm also running dns on server and havent modified anything.

    Thanks

    • What is WSF?
    • Never browse to SharePoint using IP  Always use a host header or at the very minimum use MachineName:port
    • Because there's no reason to browse by IP.  This isn't a plain web application - it's SharePoint.  YOu have to explicitly name the different ways you plan to access a site, and you do this with Alternate Access Mappings.  There is no AAM for your IP, so IIS won't allow you to browse it that way.  Even so, you shouldn't be browsing by IP - use proper host headers with DNS entries.
    • The best way to do it is to use a host header when creating the web app or add a host header to the Intranet zone of an existing web app, then add that new URL to DNS so that all your domain machines can access it easily with a friendly name.  Use default ports, too, to make it easier.  When you have host headers, you can have multiple sites on port 80
