Bing maps and custom tiles RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am in the process of tiling up data to display on my maps.  The problem is that I have millions of files and am having trouble storing/moving/accessing them.  Can anyone recommend software they have used for handling the custom tiles they have generated?

Also is there a way to get the custom tiles which were generated for level 16 to be used at levels 17 & 18 etc.  i realise they may not look as good but its just the the number of tiles at the lower levels is getting too large that it would be nice to use the other levels tiles if as long as the quality was ok.

  • Well, you can use any FTP client such as Filezilla (http://filezilla-project.org/) to move tiles between servers, but they all typically suffer from the same problem - moving lots of very small files is always going to be a lot slower than moving one big file. You might want to check your settings to make sure that you're re-using the same connection rather than opening a new connection for every file.
Also, you could try zipping the files up into an archive, transferring the single archive file , and then unzipping it again on the destination server - this might work out quicker.

I'm not aware of a way to "re-use" lower resolution tiles and then simply zoom in on them more at a greater zoom level (I think that's what you're suggesting) - if you want tiles to appear at zoom level 17, they need to be rendered at zoom level 17.

Finally, be sure that you're only creating tiles for the area that you actually want to define - trim your tile source so that you don't include lots of extra tiles around the edges.
