  • Question

  • Hi,

Does the Apps for office work in Office Online as well?

Want to develop an app for office which should work even when document is opened in Office online. This app for office should be able to make data connection and replace some of the placeholder variables in word document with data from database.

Any thoughts/approach guidance will be helpful.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

    >>Does the Apps for office work in Office Online as well? <<

Yes, but apps for office can only support the web client such as Excel online, PowerPoint Online and Outlook Web App .etc.

If you want Word online to support apps for office, I’m afraid we cannot achieve the goal currently.

Here is some Office client applications (including rich and web clients) that support apps for Office. More details please refer to Overview of apps for Office.

    Web clients

In supported Web clients, such as Excel Online and Outlook Web App, apps for Office are hosted in an iframe that runs using the HTML5 sandbox attribute. ActiveX components or navigating the main page of the web client are not allowed. Apps for Office support is enabled in the web clients by the integration of the JavaScript API for Office. In a similar way to the rich client applications, the JavaScript API manages the app lifecycle and interoperability between the app and the web client.

If you have any suggestions about the development of Apps for office, please feel free to submit it to User Voice.

No, as I said in my first reply, currently Word Web App does not support apps for office.
