  • What is meant by Managed Virtual Machine Disk and Unmanaged Virtual Machine Disk ?

    Also, what is meant by "Per VM Limit" and "Per Disk Limit"

  • Hi 

    When we create a VM we can use managed or unmanaged disks. If your using unmanaged disks first you have to create a storage account to store the disks. In this we need to take care of the IOPS limits for storage account and the other limitations applied to storage account.

    But when we use managed disk we didn't want to create any storage accounts we can simply create a disk and add it to a VM as LUN. Microsoft will take care of the underline storage account.

  • Hi Pallab,

    when you use managed disks, Azure takes care of the underlying storage accounts for you. If you use unmanaged disks, you'll have to keep track of this yourself (eg. max IOPS in a storage account, etc.). The functionality of managed and unmanaged disks are the same; eg. you can upload your own generalized images if needed.

    Now for the per-VM and per-disk limits; the per-disk limits are as they described, eg. size and max IOPS per disk. The per-VM limits usually involve the max number of data disks which can be attached to a VM. So if you create a VM with size A2 Standard, you can attach a maximum of 4 datadisks, with 500 IOPS per disk (so the VM can run 2000 IOPS max).

  • The simplest way to understand managed v/s un-managed disk is:

    Managed Disks = are managed by Microsoft Azure and you don't need any storage account while created new disk. Since the storage account is managed by Azure you do not have full control of the disks that are being created.

    Un-managed Disks = is something which requires you to create a storage account before you create any new disk. Since, the storage account is created and owned by you, you have full control over all the data that is present on your storage account. Additionally, you also need to take care of encryption, data recovery plans etc.
