Are Expression Blend Tutorial Downloads corrupted? (ZiggyShort) - 10/17/2007 5:38 AM PST RRS feed

  • By: ZiggyShort

    I went to
    http://www.microsoft.com/expression/kc/resources.aspx?product=blend&type=selfstudy

and downloaded the course manual(s) - parts 1 and 2.

When I tried to open them Word did not recognise the format.

How do I get to read these files?

Also: Is there anything which discusses the demos which are supplied with
    Expression Blend?

Specifically I was looking at the Color Swatch application and saw in the
Xaml chunks which look like they were defining outlines of eg a bathtub

    Hi Ziggy,

The files are in Word 2007 format.

I too have been having a problem with a Self Study Tutorial assest.
Specifically, the Course Asset file #5, Fabrikam Retail Store which when
downloaded, sends a file "6_Fabrikam.zip". However, the doc file is
corrupted. Any ideas whom to contact about this?

for reading word 2007 you can download the viewer 2003 and the converter to
2007 and you can read the files and print them if you want
read the install instructions(you need both and open the files with the
    viewer instead of word)
that s how I do it

    Howdy Ziggy,

Cant help you with the MS demos... I'll leave it for them, though I should
say that I have about quite a few starter video tutorials now available from
http://www.learnexpressionstudio.com Hopefully these, along with your other
research can get you on the right track.

As far as the Path is concerned, you are looking at the mini-language syntax
XAML uses to define a Path object.

All the characters such as M and L and z all refer to shortcuts in defining
    path lines, arcs etc...

You dont really need to worry about it too much as you can easily create
Paths in both Expression Blend and Expression Design using the Pen and Pencil
type tools found in the Toolbox. You can also convert things like Rectangles
and Elipses to Paths as well.

To learn more about Paths you can check out this link:
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb412389.aspx

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

I found Word 2003 Viewer at
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en

I went to what I thought was Word 2007 Converter but when I installed it, it
said I had nothing relevant to update.

Will look further and post when I find it: unless anyone gets to it first?

And the converter can be found on:

And yes, I can now read the files.
    Thanks Germaine

The playlist etc can be found from
    http://www.microsoft.com/expression/kc/resources.aspx?product=blend&type=selfstudy.
You need to open up each of the headings under "Course Outline and Assets",
and then download the files for each module. I didn't find the logo file, but
that doesn't really matter for the tutorial - the others do.

Having just worked through the whole of the first course manual I have to
say that I found parts of it deeply frustrating - mainly when the samples
aren't configured quite the same as the tutorial text, partly because much of
it tells you what to do but not why. Here's a few suggestions:

-- When you're doing the first part (in Expression Design) it's worth naming
the objects, so that you can recognise them when you reuse in Blend. This
isn't mentioned in the text so far as I could see.

-- When you create the first project in Blend make sure the language is set
to C#. If you've fiddled around with Blend before you start the tutorial and
you're a VB rather than a C# person it retains the VB setting - but the
samples are in C# so just generate error messages when you try to use them.
So far as I can see there's no way to change the language after you've
started - and by the time you discover this you've done a lot of work (you
don't need to completely redo it - you can cut and paste your XAML into a new
    project).

-- The links between Blend and Visual Studio 2005 don't seem to work
properly in the samples. When you enter an event action it opens VS and
pastes in a new handler stub, ignoring the one already in the sample code.
Then the project doesn't build. The answer seems to be to delete the newly
    created stub.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks DavidP
But I have downloaded all of the files for each heading, and they don't
contain the files that are called for by filename in manual 1 and 2. I get
an erorr "unexpected end" when I download and unzip "6-Fabrikkam *" file. I
don't know if the files I needed are in that download. The first part of
Manual 1 (Design), the build of the video player was good, I ran into 2
sample file errors, but I worked through it. I started the Blend study using
what I had built in the design part, ran into some conflicts with the
instructions with the pictures in the manual, so I skipped that study and
went to " Expression Design + Expression Blend: A Button's Life" in Manual 2.
I wish someone would notify the Expression team about these errors, I tried
    to no avail.

    Cliff,

Did you extract the contents of the downloaded compressed (zip) files - this
seems to be necessary before the contents become visible to Blend? And I
think one of them may have had another zip file inside it (memory's a bit
hazy on that and I've deleted the zips now).

I too had a problem with 6-Fabrikam.zip, but the only thing I haven't been
able to extract is the Word document Module 6 Fabrikam Lab Manual. I'm
guessing that the contents of that have already been included in Manual 1, so
    it isn't critical.

Having now worked through Manual 2 I'd suggest to anyone just starting out
that they start with that one - it gives much better explanations of what's
going on. I only encountered one substantial hitch - getting the Colour
Swatch project to build without errors. The files required are in 7-Other
    HOLs.

I agree your point about getting the errors fixed. For anyone like me
working through the tutorials on trial versions before deciding whether to
buy the tutorial experience colours the overall judgement.

I am not on the trial version, I brought the Expression Studio, with
Expression Studio you get Blend, Design, Media and Expression Web in one
package, I started with Frontpage and dabbled with Flash and Dreamweaver and
the trial versions of Expression Blend, Media and Design. The Expression
Studio is cheaper(Academic version-$129) than Flash and Dreamweaver, and has
the same functionality. Expression Studio is worth the money, it is
totally new from Frontpage and there are new step-by-step books coming from
Microsoft this month, but the Expression team should be made aware of these
errors. This is very confusiing for beginners.

The Expression Blend tutorial manuals are in Word 2007 format. If you have
Word 2003, you need to download the Viewer 2003 app. If you have an even
earlier version of Word (pre 2003), your out of luck.

To get the Viewer 2003 (install to existing Microsoft Office location):
    1. Download/Install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Office
    2007" from here:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx

    2. Download/Install the Viewer 2003 from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&DisplayLang=en

    3. To read the Expression Blend manuals, DO NOT CLICK ON THEM. Instead:
        a. Rename their extension from .doc to .docx
        b. Open the Viewer 2003
        c. From the Viewer 2003 File menu, open the .docx Expression Blend
    document.

Of course, all Word 2007 features are removed from the document and I know
of no way to "see" what may have been left out.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks, but I don't have a problem with downloading the manuals, I have
Office 2007, David had that problem, it might help him. My problem is the
sample files for the self study tutorials, they don't match the files called
for in the manuals, have you done the self study tutorials?

The Expression Blend tutorial manuals are in Word 2007 format. If you have
Word 2003, you need to download the Viewer 2003 app. If you have an even
earlier version of Word (pre 2003), your out of luck.

To get the Viewer 2003 (install to existing Microsoft Office location):
    1. Download/Install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Office
    2007" from here:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx

    2. Download/Install the Viewer 2003 from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&DisplayLang=en

    3. To read the Expression Blend manuals, DO NOT CLICK ON THEM. Instead:
        a. Rename their extension from .doc to .docx
        b. Open the Viewer 2003
        c. From the Viewer 2003 File menu, open the .docx Expression Blend
    document.

Of course, all Word 2007 features are removed from the document and I know
of no way to "see" what may have been left out.

    Hope this helps!
