Windows UPS service via a serial port RRS feed

  • Question

I need to ask for some clarification.  I am a software engineer working for a company who designs embedded systems.  We are designing a system with a UPS contact-closure type device incorporated into our system.  I am writing code for a microcontroller that will be in our UPS that will be used to interface to the Windows UPS service via a serial port.  It will provide UPS power status and battery status signals to XP.  I will be using CTS to indicate a power failure and DCD to indicate a low battery condition to the XP OS.  I am not going to use DTR to allow XP to initiate a UPS shutdown. In my research covering how the interface works it is starting to look like I will loose the ability to use the COM PORT designated as the UPS Service interface as a RS-232 communication channel to my microcontroller.  Is this true?

    Thank you,
