Internet explorer crashes when visiting certain pages RRS feed

  • the same is true for http://www.tweakers.net and http://gathering.tweakers.net

Surfing around for a couple of minutes and the browser crashes. It also takes an awful lot of time to render the page when scrolling up and down. Visit this page from an Windows Phone 8.1 device http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1587561/last and the browser crashes when scrolling up and down.

  • IE crashes like crazy, hangs on certian pages like YouTube and facebook where I can't scroll and sometimes screen goes black and I gotta close. WP 8.1 preview is awfully buggy. I'm on Lumia 521.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Support.  I understand you're having issues with Internet Explorer crashing on your phone.  While looking into this issue, what is the make and model of your phone?

When viewing websites on your phone, do you have it set to load mobile versions of the website first, or the full desktop version?  You can check this setting by opening Internet Explorer, tap the 3 dots in the lower right, and going to Settings.  Try internet browsing with both Wi-Fi on, and off, and see if the error persists as well.

You'll also want to clear your internet history, and the temporary folder on your phone.  To clear the temporary folder, open the Storage Sense App and tap on your phone's internal memory.  You should see Temporary Files.  Tap that and then clear that folder, and then turn the phone off for about two minutes.

Feel free to get back to us when you can.

  • Hi Chanh,

This issue is clearly related to IE11 on WP8.1 as the site of tweakers.net does work properly on Android, iOS and WP <=8.0 so it is not related to all the 'fixes' you suggest i.e. clearing internet history, browsing on Wifi etc.

Tweakers.net is a very popular tech website in the Netherlands which uses a responsive website in order to match the screen size of the user. The site ignores the user-agent, so switching between desktop and mobile view makes no sense. The problem only occurs when you go to tweakers.net on Windows Phone 8.1. As soon as you scroll up and down the site renders tremendously slow, i.e. a lot of white spaces before content is shown and eventually the browser will crash. This is especially the case on the forums of tweakers.net at gathering.tweakers.net when reading threads with a lot of replies such as: http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1587561/last. When forcing the desktop modus of the site (which can be done on: http://tweakers.net/devicedetect/) the website works out of the sudden much more fluently and all of the previous problems disappear. So it looks like IE11 cannot handle the CSS needed for the mobile view of the site (which is excluded when you force the desktop modus on the page mentioned earlier).

I hope this information helps you to resolve this bug in IE or at least to identify which part of the website causes IE to crash.

  • Running recent developer preview of Windows phone 8.1. Explorer crashes and drops me back to the Bing/Cortana search results screen.

It happens with delta.com check-in pages. Making online checkin impossible. I tried 3 times before I gave up and used a WP8 which doesn't have the developer preview. Using that older version I could check in successfully.

  • IE still crashes after installing the update. For example, try going to http://tweakers.net/nieuws/96068/oud-iphonegebruikster-klaagt-apple-aan-om-berichten-die-niet-aankomen.html and scroll down to the bottom past the hundreds of comments and up again. At one point it will crash.
