Questions about a copied website RRS feed

  • Question

  • My company is partner with AutoExperten in Sweden. Our name i AutoHerba. www.autoherba.se . I got the permission to copy their website www.autoexperten.se . I spoked to one ot their webmaster and he said I have to change some number that was the same as Autoexperten. That number messed up the statistics from Google Analytics. Does anyone know what number he meant? How do I change it?

    One more IMPORTANT question: He also mentioned something about EPiServer. Autoexperten have a license that AutoHerba doesn't. We could get in trouble for having a site gerated by EPiServer but no license. Do I have to make a completley new website or can I just delete some EPiServer codes? I've deleted some already...

    (Since he said that I've deleted some codes that was unnecessary for us. And my questions could be solved...but since i'm quite new to this and it could give us big problems I want to be sure)

    Thank you in advance!

  • What is the number that you had to change/ What does it do?

    EPiServer is a content management system so if you are using it you almost certainly will need a licence. On the other hand, if your site is a static copy of the pages but doesn't use the EPiServer CMS, then you wouldn't need a licence.

  • Sounds like the site has Google Analytics on it. You should get your own analytics account and replace the analytics code used on the first site with the new one. Have the person who gave you permission to use the site show you what code needs to be changed/removed.

  • I am assuming you mean google's code for tracking statistics, which is at the bottom of the original site's pages.  If so, that means you need your own google analytic code for your site, or at least to remove the original site's code from yours.

    It looks like you removed it, since it's not on yours.

  • Then you need to ask him, otherwise it will be impossible to do
    anything about it.

    You also need to do some cleaning on your pages, you have empty
    tables, empty absolute positioned divs and repeat this until you know
    it by heart: "The spacebar is NOT a layout tool". Position things
    using CSS instead.

  • Out of curiosity -- what is the point of just copying someone's website?  Why could you not just link to it?

  • To Ian: I don't what number. He just said that our pages has the same number (because I copied ther website) and it will mess up the statistics. Our pageviews will be in their statistics. I just copied this website by right click and view..

    To Clark: We want our own webpage with same design and I'm not that good at making layouts. We have completley different content in our pages.

  • If you mean this code:

    <script
     type
    ="text/javascript"
    >
    var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
    document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
    </script >
    <script
     type
    ="text/javascript"
    >
    try {
    var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-XXXXXXXX-XX");
    pageTracker._trackPageview();
    } catch(err) {}</script >

    You need to get your own Google Analytics code (replace UA-XXXXXXXXX-XX) with the number for your site, so it starts counting visits to your web site.

  • Keep in mind that with permission or not viewer who see that the site is copied will think you stole it.  That's the impression they will get regardless of how you got it, or what kind of permission you have.

    Just saying its better to purchase a template if you're not a good designer.
