  • For an e-commerce platform based on SOA,
what kind of architecture services would you recommend? SOAP or REST?

  • Hi .Net Dev

    It depends on your requirements.

SOAP has more full featured enterprise capapabilities primarily because of the extensitive support of WS-* standards. Which give you advanced security, reliable messaging, routing, distributed transactions, more formal contract etc. REST is more simple - which can be good if you expose a public api that is to be consumbed by a big diverse audience. If you have extreme load you utalize caching of GET requests in proxys  - for security it primarily uses authentication features in the http protocol like digest and basic auth over ssl.

But also beware that the REST services are based on verbs in the HTTP protocol. So you loose the ability to use other transports that might be faster, more secure by default, reliable etc. Like TCP, Named Pipes and MSMQ.

    Hope this helps you out.
