Project Server or Project Online

Question

Since we do not have SharePoint and it's not coming soon, what options do we have for Project Server or Project Online?  Will either work without SharePoint? 

The biggest need for project management is to allow the staff assigned to tasks to be able to update their portion of the project.  More and more of our project managers are using MS Project Professional at their desks.   Any recommendations?

Hi Doug,

If you're not planning to have Sharepoint Server which is mandatory for Project Server on-premises, Project Online would be a good choice since all the infra will be in the cloud.

If we have MS Project Pro on our desk tops, does Project Online allow the staff on tasks to update their tasks?  That's the collaborative portion we are looking to add.

You can definitely use Project Pro on your desktop to connect to Project Online.

Yes that helps.

What we would like is to be able to assign Bob to a task, then we would like Bob to be able to update his own tasks, adding/updating the start time, end time, notes, update the status, etc.  Can we do this with Project Online? 

I realize we would need licenses for the Project Managers to be able to do everything, but are there more limited licenses (or CALs) for staff assigned to update just their portions?

Doug:

Project Online/Project Server are SharePoint applications. You cannot have one without the other. If you are not familiar with these technologies, I suggest that you consider at least discussing your direction with a certified partner. It may be that you can accomplish what you want using Project Pro and SharePoint online with Project Online. You can synchronize an individual Project with a SharePoint task list and users can update their assignments in SharePoint. If you need Enterprise features, cross-project reporting, resource management and the like, Project Online is the way to go.

Doug - this is an old thread, so maybe you already figured this out, but what you are describing is a perfect use case for Project Lite - which is less expensive than Project Pro.  Check out http://products.office.com/en-us/Project/project-lite for a description.
